Where are you originally from? And how long have you been in Portland?
My name is Krysta York and I am originally from Grants Pass, Ore. I moved up to Portland in 1997 to attend college at Portland State University, where I graduated with a degree in marketing and advertising. I’ve been here for 21 years.
What is your favorite thing about Portland?
One of my favorite things about Portland is that you aren’t too far from the beach, the mountains, wine country, you name it. It’s so central; so you can explore so much in the city as well as outside the city.
What is your favorite spot or thing to do in Portland?
I would have to say my favorite thing to do in Portland is to explore the food scene.
How long have you been working at this professional wedding boutique?
I have been working in the wedding industry since 2005, where I started at Charlotte’s Weddings as a bridal consultant. I immediately fell in love with helping women feel beautiful and being able to make those connections with brides was pretty special. In 2007, I purchased the store from the previous owner and have been making it my own ever since by doubling the size and remodeling.
What people/training/experiences/opportunities led you to this career path?
I worked in the weight loss industry for three years before becoming a bridal consultant and it was the same kind of job: You work with people who have a goal, and it’s an emotional decision to lose weight just like it is to purchase your wedding gown. With my college degree and my experience in an emotional sales environment and my love for fashion, it was a perfect fit. I just loved helping people feel amazing!
How would you describe the importance of your role, and why do you feel a bride should visit a professional wedding boutique?
Charlotte’s Weddings has been a bridal boutique in Portland for almost 25 years. Brides come to our store for the ultimate wedding gown shopping experience. We pride ourselves on having knowledgeable staff, excellent customer service, a large variety of wedding gowns and a relaxing and fun atmosphere. Being in the industry that long, we have built strong relationships with our vendors, so we know we are providing gowns from reputable sources. So, if an issue were to arise, our brides should have complete trust in us. Our vendors will work with us and make sure our brides are taken care of.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of helping brides is when they have that moment where they look at themselves and say, “I feel beautiful in this dress; this is the dress I want to get married in.” You know at that point that you have done your job.
What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?
The most difficult part of the job is being in an emotional environment. Between family dynamics and the stress of planning a wedding, making such a big and personal purchase can put a lot of pressure on brides. Thank goodness our consultants are so well trained and we help put all of those pressures to rest.
Do you work solo or do you have a team?
Charlotte’s couldn’t do what we do without an amazing team of managers and consultants. Everyone has a job to do in the store, but no one ever feels like they have to do it alone. We are all here to help each other and to help our brides together. It takes all of us doing our part to make Charlotte’s the success it is today.
What do you attribute to your success as a wedding boutique? What do you think makes you stand apart from others in your field?
Our store stands out above the crowd because of our longevity as a business, our staff, our large private bridal suites and gowns that are exclusive to our store, including over 100 over a Size 18. Plus, our price point is very reasonable. We offer the ultimate experience in finding your wedding gown.
At what point in the wedding planning process should clients hire you?
We suggest starting shopping for your gown eight months to a year before your wedding. It could take up to six months for your gown to come then a few months for alterations; if you don’t make decisions quickly, it could take a month or so to find your wedding gown. We highly suggest you make an appointment at our store because it guarantees you a private suite and a dedicated bridal consultant. Now, if your wedding is sooner than a year out, don’t worry: We are one of the best stores for finding you a gown quickly; we work extremely hard to find our brides the wedding gown of their dreams no matter what the circumstances.
What is your best advice for wedding clients?
Our best advice when you start to shop for your wedding gown is don’t over-shop. Brides can have a tendency to want to keep shopping, whether it’s to please the group she is with or because she may think there may be something better out there. Over-shopping can cause confusion and make the buying process become less fun and more difficult. Trust your consultant and trust your instincts. Bring people to your appointment that you value their opinion but who will also let you make your own opinion; we suggest no more than five, but of course, we can accommodate large groups as well. We would also say don’t be afraid to try something on that you would have never picked out for yourself; a majority of our brides always buy something that wasn’t even close to what they originally came in wanting. And finally, have fun and enjoy your gown shopping experience. Let us help you make it something to remember!
