Cambodian silk! French lace! Hand-done embroidery! Right here on NW 23rd. We had a wonderful visit with owner & designer Savon and his creative team at Cocoon Silk recently and we are so excited to tell you about their amazing Portland bridal boutique. Their commitment to their art, as well as providing outstanding service to their clients, is so wonderful to see. And their designs are remarkably affordable, so don’t let your budget stop you from checking them out. Definitely one of the must visit bridal boutiques (and menswear shops) in Portland. Where are you originally from? And how long have you been in Portland?
I’m originally from Cambodia, I moved to the US in 2005 to continue my education.
What is your favorite thing about Portland?
My favorite thing about Portland is the friendliness of the people! Everyone I have met here is so welcoming nice, and willing to help out myself and my business. I have been greatly inspired by their charming and affable personalities.
What is your favorite spot or thing to do in Portland?
My favorite spot in Portland is definitely the Nob Hill district, especially in spring. It’s stunning to see all those flowers blooming and people enjoying outdoor altogether!
How long have you been working as a professional wedding dress designer?
I have been working as a professional wedding dress designer since 2006.
What people/training/experiences/opportunities led you to this career path?
In Cambodia, I constantly worked with silk fabrics and learned my family’s trade of sewing. Being the oldest sibling, it was my responsibility to provide for my family so when the opportunity to start Cocoon Silk presented itself to me, I took it.
How would you describe the importance of your role & why do you feel a couple should hire a professional wedding dress designer for their wedding day?
A wedding is an event filled with joy, love, and good feelings. A wedding dress that makes a bride feel confident and beautiful is important to being able to enjoy it to the fullest. Sometimes however I’ve seen that finding a dress that achieves this can be difficult. Either the dress that the bride envisions herself wearing hasn’t been created yet, or it doesn’t fit her price range. This is where custom wedding dress salons like Cocoon Silk come in. Me and my team help brides who want to recreate or redesign a dress in order to make them feel like their best selves on their wedding day.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is helping brides to feel and look their best without hurting their purse strings and alleviating some of the stress that comes with planning a wedding.
What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?
Bridal gowns are expected to be perfect, which means me and my team look at every single detail of our gowns. Sometimes that can be time consuming and a little stressful, but the gorgeous products we make reflect the importance of considering every thing on the dress.
Do you work solo or do you have a studio and/or team?
I work with my sister and a team of five other talented and positive employees.
What do you attribute to your success as a wedding dress designer and owner of a wedding salon? What do you think makes you stand apart from others in your field?
What sets Cocoon Silk apart from other Portland bridal boutiques is how we listen and collaborate with clients in order to create their dream dresses. Before starting our process, our clients and I meet and work together to create a rough sketch of the dress in order for me to be aware of their wants and needs. Being a custom salon, we love to hear what our brides ideas and plans are and incorporate them into a beautiful, cohesive dress. Another thing that sets Cocoon Silk apart is the use of high quality fabrics. The fabrics used in my dresses are imported from my family’s silk farm in Cambodia. I believe the reason why Cocoon Silk has been and continues to be so successful is because of the combination of great customer service, beautiful fabrics, and the creation of connections between myself/my employees and our clients.
At what point in the wedding planning process should clients hire you?
Creating a wedding dress does take some time, so I would recommend contacting us about before the wedding date. This way, we have ample time to make sure everything fits and looks perfect!
Where do you draw inspiration? Are there any current trends you are excited about?
I draw the most inspiration from the ideas and personalities my brides bring in. Each and every bride is different and inspire me in different ways. I do like to know what is going on in the fashion and bridal world, but I do not concern myself with trends since my belief is that a bridal gown is very individualistic, and therefore what is considered “trendy” by one bride, isn’t considered it by the other.
What is your best advice for wedding clients?
If you know what you want but can’t seem to find it, if you want to remake someone elses wedding gown, or if you want a specific style of dress but can’t find it in your price range, seeking out a custom bridal salon is definitely the best way to go.
Anything else you’d like couples to know about you?
I have a lot of experience working with brides of different body shapes and sizes. I am also very open to working with LGBTQ+ brides. Cocoon welcomes all types of brides.
