ecoShuttle is an environmentally friendly commuting service in Portland, and did you know that they also offer wedding transportation? You can book them for transportation to your wedding and rehearsal dinner, and as a touring service around the city for your out of town guests! We are thrilled that they have partnered with us and will be the exclusive transportation company for our upcoming local wedding planning event…The Portland Venue Crawl! We chatted with their Sales Manager, Mark Klosterman – read on to learn more about this awesome local wedding service!
Where are you originally from? And how long have you been in Portland?
I’m from Ohio originally. I’ve been in Portland since October 2006.
What is your favorite thing about Portland?
My favorite thing about Portland is the music and art scene, and the many restaurant options.
What is your favorite spot or thing to do in Portland?
My favorite spot is probably Sauvie Island on a nice summer day, relaxing and swimming with friends.
I majored in communications, specifically video production and film, which is initially how I ended up working with ecoShuttle – first as a one-off videographer, and was later hired on to drive and do marketing events part-time. In 2011 I went full-time to head up our sales and marketing department.
How would you describe the importance of your role & why do you feel a couple should hire a professional transportation company for their wedding day?
As Portland weddings go, there are many out of town guests and lots of weddings venues that require transportation and solid logistical planning to go with that. I play a role in helping the couples organize their guest transportation and timelines in order to make sure everything goes smoothly.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part is after the service, when the work is done and the couple is telling you how smoothly things went.
What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?
There can occasionally be times when a couple has transportation needs with many buses, many different destinations, and a tight timeline, which can sometimes complicate things.
Do you work solo or do you have a studio and/or team?
I typically do the booking and logistics on my own, but for more complicated services I will always involve our operations team to make sure we have all of our bases covered.
What do you attribute to your success? What do you think makes you stand apart from others in your field?
I think we’ve been successful because of our flexibility in both the booking side of things, and also because we have great working relationships with many of the most popular venues in the area. We’ve also been working with a number of the same wedding coordinators over the years, so you get those word of mouth recommendations and that’s really the best you can hope for.
At what point in the wedding planning process should clients hire you?
For summer weddings, the sooner the better as that is when things are busiest. I would aim to plan on arranging that 6 to 8 months out to get a vehicle held, and loose ends can be tied up closer to the actual wedding date.
What is the most important thing that couples should ask someone in your profession before hiring them?
It always helps to see proof of insurance and to check out a company’s DOT number and safety record ahead of time. There are a surprising number of transportation companies who just fly completely under Federal and State regulators and most of their clients don’t know – you want to make sure the bus has been inspected recently and that the drivers are qualified to drive them, which is what you will get with DOT registered companies.
What is your best advice for wedding clients?
Don’t wait until the last minute. Try to get an idea of how many passengers you’re expecting and maybe even have guests RSVP if they’ll be interested in using the bus – that way you don’t purchase more bus capacity than needed.
Anything else you’d like couples to know about you?
We perform transportation for nearly 100 weddings a year! We’re experienced, professional, and eager to make sure things go smoothly, no matter how complicated the event may be.
What other local wedding professionals are currently inspiring you?
Sara Berkgvist with Ella Events was one of many event coordinating professionals with whom I worked last year. Her attention to detail and communicative nature made a complex wedding go smoothly for all involved.
