Where are you originally from? And how long have you been in Portland?

I’m originally from Romania! I moved here to the Portland/Vancouver area when I was almost 6, hence the lack of accent, and haven’t really relocated since, unless you count a two-month stint in LA after I got married.

What is your favorite thing about Portland?

My favorite thing about Portland is the overall friendly community. Oh, and the COFFEE. I swear, once you’ve had coffee in Portland, you’re absolutely ruined for anywhere else.

What is your favorite spot or thing to do in Portland?

Lately, my favorite thing to do in Portland is meet with fellow wedding professionals and try a new coffee spot each time!

How long have you been working as a professional wedding planner?

My business just turned a year old on March 23! Once I decided to become a wedding planner/stylist, I went all in. I tried juggling a full-time job for the first half, but I quickly learned it was exhausting. I’ve been doing it full-time since October.

What people/training/experiences/opportunities led you to this career path?

Like I mentioned, my corporate experience helped me refine my skill set of organizing, planning, and streamlining the logistical aspect of being a wedding planner. My love for hosting unique and well thought out events that bring people together equipped me to develop my styling skills.

How would you describe the importance of your role and why do you feel a couple should hire a professional wedding planner for their wedding day?

Oh man. I mean, I guess you don’t HAVE TO hire a wedding planner…if you want to worry about everything and everyone and all the details being in the right place. If you don’t mind being stressed out and focused on troubleshooting your wedding day, then you surely don’t need a wedding planner. If you know everything there is to know about putting together an event that allows guests to enjoy themselves to their highest capacity, and if you know how to make everything look amazing while you’re at it, then you got this! If you have more than 24 hours in your day, and a clone (while you’re at it!), then you do you! But don’t forget to find the time to actually get married to the love of your life while you juggle all that chaos. On a serious note, I believe hiring a wedding planner ensures that you get to actually enjoy the engagement season in your life. You don’t have to put your relationship on hold to plan your wedding; you can continue deepening your love for each other AND accomplish quite a bit if you partner with someone who can handle the nitty-gritty for you.

What is the best part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is being able to reassure my clients that in the end, they’ll be married, and as long as they’ve accomplished that goal, then it will all be worth it. I love being able to help remind them that it’s the marriage after the wedding that deserves the most attention, so they can rest assured that I’ll handle the details in order to allow them to focus on that.

What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?

When it comes to weddings, the biggest challenge is releasing the pressure to compare your wedding to every other wedding out there getting published and featured and going viral. Incorporating unique details in your wedding that are true to who you are is important, yes, but succumbing to the pressure to follow certain trends or traditions shouldn’t be on your radar. I always recommend focusing inward rather than outward when it comes to planning a wedding. Know what you’re about and stick to your guns instead of keeping up with the Joneses for the sake of popularity.

Do you work solo or do you have a studio and/or team?

It is currently just me behind the scenes of Kamea Events! I occasionally do have day-of assistants with me, though.

What do you attribute to your success as a wedding planner? What do you think makes you stand apart from others in your field?

My current success couldn’t have been made possible without the support I’ve received from other wedding professionals in the area. Meeting new people and establishing relationships have been fundamental to spreading the word about my little company. My relentless attention to detail & drive to prioritize quality communication sets me apart from other wedding professionals.

At what point in the wedding planning process should clients hire you?

Wedding planners are best hired at the beginning of your wedding planning process! My connections with other vendors and my other insights often go unused when clients hire me after most of the pieces of the puzzle have been assembled.

Where do you draw inspiration? Are there any current trends you are excited about?

Lately, I’ve found myself drawing inspiration from nearly any of my surroundings, particularly architecture, art, and nature. I’m most excited about the current trend of using velvet. Something about the use of varying textures really brings a design together.

What is the most important thing that couples should ask someone in your profession before hiring them?

One of the most important things a couple should look into before hiring a wedding planner is how well they mesh with their personality. Seeing as a wedding planner wears many unconventional hats during the process (family mediator, confidant, premarital counselor), developing a secure relationship with your wedding planner is key.

What is your best advice for wedding clients?

Like I mentioned before, my most commonly given piece of advice is, “no matter what happens, in the end, you’ll be married.” Whether we like it or not, something (big or small) goes a little wonky on the day of the wedding, but there’s no point in stressing about it. Getting married is the ultimate goal!

Anything else you’d like couples to know about you?

While I’m a go-getter when it comes to planning and organizing, I tend to still maintain a relaxed approach to it all. In the midst of the most chaotic situations, you will still find me shrugging it off, accepting the changes, and moving forward in order to make the absolute best of it.
