When it comes to picking your Portland wedding photographer there is a lot to consider, but you just need to meet Becca & Kevin (pictured above) of Lady & Gent Photography once to know that they are the dynamic duo you want by your side documenting your love story. Not only artistically talented, but also just good people. Friendly, reliable, energetic, and dedicated. They will instantly feel like old friends that you can trust. We sat down with them recently and here is what we learned. Take a read!
Where are you originally from? How long have you been in Portland?
Growing up in Tacoma, Wash., we fell in love with Portland when Kevin went to college here over a decade ago. Knowing we would be back someday, we moved here for good three years ago.
What is your favorite thing about Portland?
When you’re in Portland, you’re close to everything. Great coffee, food, and a warm and vibrant culture is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to having all the “big city” things, we love being condensed into a “small town” feel; we adore being this close to the Columbia River George, the coast, and the mountains. No doubt, Portland has it all.
What is your favorite spot or thing to do in Portland?
We love a good, old-fashioned day trip with our friends and our golden-doodle Pixel. Packing picnics full of our New Seasons favorites and heading to Sauvie Island for a day on the river has got to be on the top of the list!
How long have you been working as a professional wedding photographer?
We established Lady & Gent Photography in 2012.
What led you to this career path?
We were married very young. A small beach ceremony with 40 of our closest friends and family was perfect. However, we did make the mistake of not having a professional photographer there to capture the day. Within six months of marriage, we realized the error of our ways. We began offering to take pictures for friends at their weddings who were also not planning on having professional photography coverage and instantly fell in love with the craft. After much hard work and focus, we launched our professional portrait studio four years later.
How would you describe the importance of your role & why do you feel a couple should hire a professional wedding photographer for their wedding day?
We can speak firsthand to the importance of hiring a professional wedding photographer. Here we are all these years later: still married, four kids, more in love than ever…with ZERO professional wedding portraits. Everyone will eat the food, drink the drinks, and dance the dances…but beautiful portraits will be what you have to remember your special day.
What is the best part of your job?
Weddings are such an important and intimate time in a couple’s life. Hearing couples commit themselves to “forever” and capturing not only them but also the village of family and friends that made them who they are today is an immense honor. Doing this alongside the one whom we have vowed to love and cherish ourselves brings a joy and a sense of purpose that is hard to describe.
What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?
Engaged couples are inundated with more wedding “how-to” and “must-have” related content than ever. This, coupled with Pinterest, can be really stifling for the creative professionals you have hired to be a part of your wedding day. We really want our couples to trust us to capture their wedding day beautifully no matter what happens. Beautiful portraits really can be captured anywhere and anytime. And who you are, and your love for each other, is enough! So even when things don’t go according to plan, or the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ve got you covered. Make sure we know what is important to you (i.e. lots of pictures of grandma), skip the shot list and the micro-management, and let’s celebrate and create something beautiful!
Do you work solo or do you have a studio and/or team?
We are a husband-and-wife team.
What do you attribute to your success as wedding photographers? What do you think makes you stand apart from others in your field?
Our success as wedding photographers can be attributed to our dedication to each other and mutual respect in all facets of life. In addition to our business, we are building a legacy of love and commitment through our family and have been navigating what it looks like to do both well for the last six-plus years. And while it has not been easy, here we are, better together. We push each other creatively and professionally and have a deep level of trust between us. We also have the extreme advantage of flawless nonverbal communication on every wedding day. You know your significant other can communicate a whole lot to you with just one look.
At what point in the wedding planning process should clients hire you?
We encourage couples to secure a date and venue first. Then secure your photographer immediately after that. Couples are booking further and further in advance, so don’t wait!
Where do you draw inspiration? Are there any current trends you are excited about?
Being a wedding photographer means you have to be strong in several different types of photography. It makes sense that we love looking at fashion, music, and lifestyle magazines for inspiration on how to pose people. But we equally love pouring over publications like National Geographic, food blogs, cookbooks, and cinema for inspiration as well. One current trend we are really excited about is that couples seem to be including more of whatever makes them unique and whatever their passions are into their weddings, more than wanting a carbon copy of a specific wedding they saw online.
What is the most important thing that couples should ask someone in your profession before hiring them?
We always encourage couples to ask potential photographers to see some full wedding galleries. We are living in a highly stylized and curated time where everyone is sharing only the highlights from their everyday lives. Yes, weddings are full of beautiful moments, but in reality… it is an all-day marathon that is captured on a micro- and macro level. Seeing how a wedding is captured from beginning to end will give you a much better understanding of what you can expect from your photographer and the portraits you are going to cherish for a lifetime.
What is your best advice for wedding clients?
We are fortunate to live in an area of the country where there is no shortage of extremely talented wedding photographers, but what makes us all unique is the people we are. On your wedding day, you’re going to spend more time with your wedding photographers than just about anybody else. So before you hire your wedding photographer, ask to see those full wedding galleries *and* make sure you can imagine hanging out with them for an entire day with your friends and family. Doing those two things, you can’t go wrong!
Anything else you’d like couples to know about you?
We love coffee, cocktails, and “The Office”…we will also probably ask you what the latest TV series you binge-watched was or current read is. We think there is so much beauty in the ordinary, and love getting to know people!
