Where are you originally from? And how long have you been in Portland?

I’m personally originally from Seattle but moved to Alaska at such a young age that it will be my forever home. I migrated south to Portland first in 2001 but realized I needed a little more warmth to unfreeze from living in sub-arctic temperatures so I moved to Tempe, Arizona before officially moving back to Portland in 2008.

What is your favorite thing about Portland?

The food! I feel spoiled living in a city that has such amazing food that whenever I leave, I realize just how much of a food snob I’ve become!

What is your favorite spot or thing to do in Portland?

I’m pretty low-key, so my favorite thing to do in Portland is to cozy up in a favorite coffee shop while I plan for world domination. Okay, not really, but I do love my coffee and strategizing on the next big thing.

How long have you been working as a professional wedding (fill in blank)?

Although I have a long history working in the events sector, starting Something Borrowed in 2011 was the first time I had ever worked in the wedding industry.

What people/training/experiences/opportunities led you to this career path?

Coming from a corporate event coordination and planning background, I never knew the world of weddings. When the idea came to mind to start a boutique rental business, I knew it was a natural progression for me. There was nothing of its kind when I launched and I knew I’d continue the process of learning and further developing myself which is at the heart of my core values.

How would you describe the importance of your role & why do you feel a couple should hire a professional (fill in blank) for their wedding day?

Our role as a boutique rental company is to help customize and personalize our clients big day. They want to create an environment that is both stylish and portrays who they are as a couple and know they may need help executing on their idea. Whether they just need rentals or styling and design services, our clients come to us because they are drawn to our style and our expertise at designing remarkable and memorable spaces.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the shopping! Though Something Borrowed has a full team, it’s the one thing I can’t let go of as I love to hand-select and curate our collection based on trends in both the fashion and interior design industries.

What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?

What’s most challenging with rentals is when clients see their dream Pinterest wedding but then realize the budget is a bit more than what they bargained for. We’re well versed in knowing how clients can come in closer to their budget without compromising on style, but we find there’s a good amount of education we need to do with our clients so that their expectations are met.

Do you work solo or do you have a studio and/or team?

I have a team that works with me as there’s no way I can do this solo (trust me, I did for a number of years). Our team consists of a design consultant, designer, administrative support and a full delivery team.

What do you attribute to your success as a wedding (fill in blank)? What do you think makes you stand apart from others in your field?

We are unique in our field in that we have a very well organized warehouse where all our inventory is available for viewing. To better help all our clients, we always recommend coming in for a design consultation so that we can truly get to know and understand how our clients want their big day to look and feel. We have worked at many of the local and regional venues and know what works and what doesn’t work. Being in business going on 7 years, we also bring a level of elevated expertise. When our clients work with us, they also have access to many of our vendor partners that we consistently work with.

At what point in the wedding planning process should clients hire you?

We always ask our clients to first have their wedding date and venue booked as your venue will enable us to better help build the design of your wedding. Keep in mind, our collection is one-of-a-kind, so if you wait until a month prior to book, our availability may be limited. Ideally, book your consultation with us 6 months in advance to ensure you have access to everything you want.

Where do you draw inspiration? Are there any current trends you are excited about?

I’m always online browsing furniture retailers or window shopping at my favorite New York boutique. The fashion industry plays such a vital role in industry trends so that’s where I typically look… whether its colors, textures and fabrics or overall vibe and aesthetic. A current trend I’m super excited about as it’s a personal favorite, is industrial chic. It’s more minimalist but the juxtaposition between cool textures dressed up with warm florals and soft touches makes my heart skip!

What is the most important thing that couples should ask someone in your profession before hiring them?

Always ask about a damage and late policy and the basics such as what’s required to hold and reserve items.

What is your best advice for wedding clients?

Come in and meet with us so that you can get a sense for exactly what our inventory includes, our style, and our rental policies.
