Where are you located and what kind of venue are you in general?

We are a historic ballroom in Portland.

Can you briefly describe your property/space including all the indoor and outdoor options?

We have 18,000 square feet of event space, and our three most popular rooms are the Crystal Ballroom, the Mayfair Ballroom, and the London Grill.

What is the maximum number of guests that can be seated for dinner and do you one caterer or a preferred list of caterers to choose from?

We can host up to 300 guests in the Mayfair Ballroom, 125 in the Crystal, and 75 in the London Grill. All of our catering is done in-house.

Do you offer lower rental rates for off-season months and/or non-Saturday weddings and does your venue have a rain plan?

We offer flexible food and beverage minimums based different months and days. We only have indoor event space.

How long has your venue been hosting weddings and events? And in your opinion, why is Portland (and surrounding areas) such an amazing place to plan a wedding?

The Benson has been open since 1912, and hosting weddings since then. Portland offers so many options to couples, indoor, outdoor, historic, modern, and so much more; you can have your ceremony by the water and your reception downtown.

What are a few things that make your venue unique and/or seem to attract wedding couples?

Our Crystal Ballroom is one of the most beautiful rooms in the city, with it’s tall ceilings and gold gilded walls, plus the London Grill with its speakeasy bar.

How would you describe the importance of the venue decision for couples and at what point in their wedding planning process should they be looking and booking their venue?

I think the venue is one of the most important decisions, the venue reflects the couple’s style.  Venues should be booked between eight months and a year out from the wedding date, but couples should look at three to four venues before picking one.

What is the best part about managing a wedding venue?

My favorite part is that once the couple says “I do,” and walks down the aisle, I get to be the first to congratulate them, and I love the joy in their faces.

What do you find most challenging about your specific line of work or weddings in general?

As much as I love all the social media sites, I think that couples keep seeing new ideas and make too many changes last-minute.

What are a few of the most important things that couples should ask their venue before booking?

I think it is important to ask for a cost estimate, but only if you are serious about the venue. Ask about the little details, like setup times, moving furniture, and delivering items to guest rooms.

What is your best advice for wedding clients during their venue search or in general?

Make sure you look at several venues and do a comparison. Pick the venue you are in love with and that reflects your personalities. Ask a lot of questions, and read the contract before you sign it.

Is there anything else you want couples or other wedding professionals to know about you or your venue?

We are always happy to do site visits; give us a call and come visit us!

What is the best way for couples to check out your venue online and/or set up a tour to visit you in person?

They can call me directly at 503-219-6706 or email me at [email protected].
